This winter, Monica was interviewed by The Glass Clouds Ensemble, a group of Juilliard musicians whose mission is to amplify the message of New York area climate leaders through the commissioning, performance, and promotion of new music. Hannah, Raina Arnett, Lauren Conroy, and Marisa Karchin first encountered BOD through Monica’s environmental leaders fellowship with the @womensEarthAlliance and @SierraClub. These trailblazers shared in a wide-ranging conversation sharing their individual journeys as artists and environmental activists. Such an amazing meeting of the minds!
The recorded interview inspired composer Hannah, to create a piece of music, which debuted in April 2022. Monica describes it as magical, emotionally moving, & passionate! During the debut, Monica gave a short presentation about our work at Beyond Organic Design. We feel very honored and grateful for this opportunity. Can’t wait to share the recording sometime soon! 🤩

Hola to All! Hope spring is treating you well and visions of more time in nature filling your thoughts. I wanted to share this 2020 webinar because shifting our perspective on waste supports our stepping into the full expression of being eco citizens. What is an eco citizen? We are mindful of our consumption, minimize waste, and think critically about how we meet our needs for food, energy etc. Please let me know your thoughts and/or share questions below! Daily gratitude and rejuvenation. Why be grateful? I, like many others, find it a grounding and positive perspective, and good for our health, Dr. Robert Emmons, professor at the University of California, agrees and had this to say in a study about gratitude: "Expressions of gratitude are like candy. They keep people coming back for more. It literally breathes new life into us. It recharges and it rejuvenates." Two of the pillars of Beyond Organic Design are gratitude and social action. We believe that teaching permaculture, design like nature, to youth and adults can create solutions to heal our world. This has given us the opportunity to both learn new things with and from our students, and feel gratitude as we see the impact of 6 years of programming that affirms students as learners and solutionaries. For example, one shy and unsure 8th grade student in 2015 attended our one-week intensive and a 6-week summer camp. We noticed and highlighted his natural problem-solving skills and whole systems approach as valuable and needed. By 2019 he was confident enough to enroll in an Engineering elective in High School where these traits were essential. What are we thankful for this Thanksgiving? Our Beyond Organic Design network is full of organizational partners that allow us to do what we love: changing mindsets and bringing something positive to the world. Being thankful is an essential part of what we do and gift to the community. Finding the silver lining in negative situations helps us as human beings to improve daily. Empowering ourselves and seeing intangible and tangible benefits, helps us develop feelings of gratitude and happiness every day. Thank you for supporting us, and each of our steps as an organization.
Happy Thanksgiving! |
