THE FIRST
URBAN PERMACULTURE CONFERENCE:

SUSTAINABILITY, EDUCATION
& DESIGN

Who's doing what? How do we plug in?
Let's create alliances for a greener tomorrow!

City College of New York
Grove School of Engineering
160 Convent Ave
New York, NY 10031

Today’s cities are complex networks of people, organizations and infrastructure. Goods are imported and produced. Pollution and waste must be managed. New York City is moving towards sustainability, but can we go beyond that? How can urban design empower citizens both socially and economically, not just through the city landscape?

Through highlighting the connections between permaculture design, green architecture, engineering, science, urban planning, and sustainability education, the Urban Permaculture Conference (UPC) will showcase how each field contributes to a greater whole. We will bring together researchers, professionals and community members with expertise in diverse disciplines related to urban life to multiply their knowledge and skills.

Permaculture emphasizes integrating disciplines and strategies. Its whole-systems methodology draws on ecological thinking to enhance any design or concept: a business model, urban building and retrofitting, parks, an urban farm---anything in contemporary life. Permaculture can help create city infrastructure both functional and beautiful, enhance community diversity, support a socially vibrant culture, promote food and water security, and strengthen our local economy. Instead of just reducing our footprint, maybe we can improve NYC’s health and well-being while still meeting our needs. Then we can all thrive.

Beyond Organic Design (BOD) is hosting the UPC in partnership with the City College of New York (CCNY). The UPC features speakers who are experts in permaculture as well as professionals in architecture, engineering, parks and city planning.

There will also be exciting workshops and group discussions, fun community tours, good food and drink, a screening of the permaculture movie INHABIT, live music, and much more. The UPC will demonstrate possibilities for creating a regenerative urban model that benefits NYC’s eight and a half million inhabitants and city dwellers around the world. It will kickstart a dialogue and strengthen alliances among key players in the urban sustainability movement. The UPC will lay the foundation for professional and community partnerships towards a safer and greener tomorrow.
Whether you're a permaculture designer, architect, engineer, or urban planner, this is a ground-breaking event you don't want to miss!
