The UDSP is an interdisciplinary, project-based, and STEAM-driven summer program incorporating multicultural literacy, participatory publishing, cross-cultural culinary exchange, and organic community garden design. K-12 students use permaculture design, math, science, and the writing process to tackle community food challenges and opportunities. UDSP participants also use art, literature, film, and music to explore essential questions about the role of food in their communities. With weekly field trips and guest speakers, students exit the 6-week program with a self-published book and permaculture garden design. The UDSP was the first educational program to integrate permaculture design into STEAM education in New York City schools.
